I’ve spent a lot of time on Band-camp over the last few weeks and less on Spotify, though giving up Spotify completely would be difficult given the playlist feature and depth of catalogue. But I’ve been bowled over by how much is on Bandcamp, the business model seems to be fairer and it keeps physical product alive.
So this week I’ve highlighted what I’ve spun on Bandcamp.
It’s taking the taking part that counts. Collection of songs written for the 2012 Olympics, reflecting different sports. Reissued for what would have been Tokyo 2020. Features Saint Etienne’s Steeplechase and Darren Hayman.
Keleketla! New this month. South Africa-London sounds and rhythms overseen by Coldcut. Including afribeat drums from the late Tony Allen.
New single from Asteroid No 4 – The Afterglow. Fresh new SF psych. New album coming soon.
Snowgoose – the making of you . Out last month and winning great reviews. Project involving members of Teenage Fanclub, Belle and Sebastian and the Soup Dragons. Psych folk, West Coast and Pentangle aplenty. Anna Shepard’s ace vocals lift it well above pastiche.
Darren Heyman & the secondary modern. Essex Arms. The mid point of his Essex trilogy from 2010. Indie- folk. Great songs reflect on post war history and new towns. All his back catalogue is on bandcamp – a lot to dig into.
New album from Jarvis Cocker Jarv Is – Beyond the pale . New album is up there with his finest Pulp moments and heads towards Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen territory.
